Hero Car Finance

Bad Credit Car Finance

Bad credit does not have to stop you getting on the road. Hero specialises in finding car finance for people other companies turn away, including customers with defaults, CCJs, IVAs, or previous refusals. Hero searches a panel of lenders, including specialists in bad credit, to find an agreement that fits your situation. The eligibility check starts with a soft search, so finding out where you stand has no impact on your credit score. And unlike the finance sites that leave you hunting for a dealer once you are approved, Hero supplies the car too, from hundreds of vehicles in stock.

Can you get car finance with bad credit?

Yes. Bad credit makes the finance market harder to navigate, not impossible. Many mainstream lenders apply blanket rules that decline any application with a credit issue showing on file, which is why so many people end up refused even when their current situation would justify approval. A default from three years ago is not the same as a missed payment last month. A CCJ that has been settled is different from one still active. The lenders Hero works with include specialists who look at the full picture rather than a fixed score threshold: current income and outgoings, employment, the deposit available, the vehicle being financed, and how the credit file has progressed recently. The starting point is the eligibility check on this site. It uses a soft search. Soft searches show up to you when you check your own credit report, but they are not visible to other lenders and they do not affect your credit score. You can find out where you stand before you commit to anything.

How Hero’s approach to bad credit car finance is different

Most car finance websites do half the job. They find you a lender, you get an approval, and then you are on your own: find a dealer, hope the dealer works with that lender, hope the car you want fits the agreement. For someone who has already been through one or two refusals, that gap between ‘approved’ and actually driving something is where the process falls apart. Hero closes that gap. The finance search and the car come from the same place. Hero searches its panel of lenders to find the agreement, and supplies the vehicle from Oakwood Motor Company group stock, hundreds of cars across the Bury and Chorley showrooms. Oakwood has been trading in the used car market for over 20 years, and every vehicle is checked and prepared before handover. One application, one team, and the keys at the end of it. Because the panel includes lenders who specialise in bad credit, an imperfect file is not treated as a dead end. The application goes to the lender most likely to say yes to your circumstances, rather than being rejected by a one-size-fits-all rule.

What counts as bad credit car finance?

Bad credit covers a wide range of situations. The label is less important than what is actually on your credit file. Common categories include:

  • Missed payments. Late or missed payments on previous credit agreements.
  • Defaults. Defaulted accounts, whether currently active or settled.
  • CCJs. County Court Judgments, active or satisfied.
  • IVAs. Individual Voluntary Arrangements, current or completed.
  • DMPs. Debt Management Plans, active or recently exited.
  • Bankruptcy. Bankruptcy, current or discharged.
  • Previous refusals. Previous refusals from other car finance providers.

What interest rate can you expect with bad credit?

There is no fixed answer. Interest rates on car finance depend on a combination of credit profile, deposit size, vehicle value, loan term, and the agreement type (Hire Purchase or Personal Contract Purchase). Bad credit applications generally attract higher rates than clean credit applications, because lenders price for risk. That is true across the whole market, not something specific to any one provider.

What affects the rate you are offered

The biggest single factor is your overall credit profile, but it is rarely the only one. Lenders also weigh:

  • The size of your deposit. A larger deposit reduces the amount borrowed and the lender’s exposure.
  • The term of the agreement. Shorter terms reduce total interest cost.
  • The vehicle. Cars with stronger resale values are easier to finance.
  • Your employment and income stability.
  • The recent direction of your credit file. A run of on-time payments counts in your favour even with older problems still showing.

How to get a feel for the numbers

Use the calculator on this site to see indicative monthly payments at different rates, deposits and terms. The figures the calculator returns are not your final offer, but they show you what is achievable at your budget. If a rate comes back higher than you expected, the calculator helps you model whether a different deposit or term gets you to a monthly payment you can live with.

How much deposit do you need?

No deposit is an option

Deposit is not mandatory. No deposit agreements are available, including on bad credit applications.

When a deposit helps

Putting a deposit down where you can has real benefits, especially on a bad credit application. A deposit reduces the amount being borrowed, which reduces the lender’s exposure to risk. That often translates into a better interest rate, a lower monthly payment, or both. It also shows commitment, which carries weight in marginal decisions. If you have a current car, part exchange is welcome, and any equity in it (the car’s value minus anything still owed on it) acts as your deposit.

How the application works

The baseline requirements are being at least 18, holding a valid driving licence, and a minimum monthly income of £1,000. Beyond that, the application is a single form, built to be completed on a phone or laptop. The flow is:

  • The eligibility check first, using a soft search. No impact on your credit score and no commitment.
  • If the result looks positive, the form continues into the full application: personal details, employment, income, outgoings.
  • Hero searches its panel of lenders for the agreement that best fits your situation, including the bad credit specialists where relevant.
  • If a lender approves you in principle, you see the shape of the offer: the amount, the term, and the indicative monthly payment.
  • You choose your car from the Hero stock. Car finance agreements are written against a specific vehicle, so the final figures are confirmed once the car is chosen.
  • If you decide to go ahead, the lender may carry out a hard search before sending the finance documents to sign. Nothing lands on your file while you are still weighing up your options.
  • You sign, the agreement completes, and the keys are handed over.

Tips to improve your chances of approval

Before you apply

A few things you can do before applying that move the odds in your favour:

  • Check your credit report yourself first. Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion all offer free access to your file. Looking at your own file does not affect your score, and it lets you spot errors before a lender does.
  • Make sure you are on the electoral roll at your current address. Lenders use the electoral roll to verify identity, and being unregistered is a common reason for declines.
  • Settle any small outstanding debts you can clear before applying. Even a small unpaid balance on a closed account can drag a marginal application below the line.
  • Avoid making multiple credit applications in a short window. Hard searches stay visible on your file, and a cluster of recent searches reads as financial pressure to lenders.

What helps the decision

On the application itself: None of these steps guarantees approval. They are sensible moves that remove obstacles.

  • If your situation is borderline, consider a joint application or a guarantor. Both routes exist for exactly this reason.
  • Be accurate. Mismatches between what you declare and what the lender verifies slow everything down and can sink an otherwise sound application.
  • Be realistic on budget. An application for a payment that sits comfortably inside your income is easier to approve than one at the edge of affordability.

Finance and the car from one place

This is the part most car finance websites cannot offer. However the finance is arranged, the car itself still has to come from somewhere, and with a bad credit agreement the choice of dealers and vehicles that fit the agreement narrows. That gap between getting approved and actually driving something is where the process can stall. Hero is part of Oakwood Motor Company group. The same business that arranges your finance holds hundreds of used cars in stock across two showrooms, in Bury and Chorley, with delivery available nationwide. Every car is owned and prepared by Oakwood, and AA inspected before handover. When your agreement is approved, the stock is already there and already compatible with the finance you have just arranged. There are no arrangement or admin fees on top. The journey ends with keys, not with a list of dealers to ring.

HP or PCP with bad credit?

Both main types of car finance are open to bad credit applicants. Which one fits depends on how you want to own and pay for the car.

Hire Purchase (HP)

With Hire Purchase you pay a fixed monthly amount across the term, and once the final payment is made the car is yours. There is no large payment waiting at the end and no annual mileage limit to manage. For bad credit applications HP is often the simpler route, because the structure is straightforward: the loan covers the car, the payments clear the loan, the car ends up owned.

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)

With PCP the monthly payments are lower, because part of the car’s value is deferred into an optional final payment (the balloon) at the end of the agreement. When the term ends you choose: pay the balloon and keep the car, hand the car back, or use any equity towards your next agreement. PCP suits people who want lower monthly payments or like changing car every few years. If you are not sure which fits, the comparison guide walks through the differences, and the calculator shows what each structure does to the monthly payment at your budget.

What if you have been refused car finance elsewhere?

A previous refusal does not rule you out. Refusals happen for many reasons that have nothing to do with your overall financial health: a missing electoral roll registration, a typo on the application, an automated decision built on a single data point. Refusals also age. A decline from 18 months ago is rarely the reason for a decline today. Different lenders also have different appetites. The mainstream lender that declined you applies different rules from the specialists on Hero’s panel.

How long does bad credit stay on your file?

Most negative entries on a UK credit file stay visible for six years. That is the standard window used by all three main credit reference agencies (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion). After six years, the entry drops off your file and no longer affects new applications. The six-year clock starts on different events depending on the entry:

  • Late payments. Late or missed payments stay for six years from the date of the missed payment.
  • Defaults. Defaults stay for six years from the date the account defaulted, not the date it was settled.
  • CCJs. CCJs stay for six years from the date of judgment. A CCJ paid in full within one calendar month is removed from your file completely.
  • IVAs. IVAs stay for six years from the start of the arrangement. Most IVAs last five to six years, so the entry typically drops off shortly after the IVA itself ends.
  • Bankruptcy. Bankruptcy stays for six years from the start date. Most bankruptcies are discharged after one year, but the record on your credit file remains for six.
  • DMPs. DMPs are not directly recorded, but the missed or reduced payments leading into them are. Those follow the standard six year rule.

Frequently asked questions

The eligibility check on this site uses a soft search, which has no impact on your credit score. A hard search only enters the picture if you decide to proceed with an offer, at which point the lender may run one before sending the finance documents to sign. That means you can check whether you are likely to be approved, see indicative figures, and even change your mind, all without your credit file taking a hit.

The eligibility check returns a result quickly. The timeline for a full decision depends on the lender and on how fast any supporting information can be provided.

Yes. No deposit agreements are available on bad credit applications, though the interest rate tends to be higher than on agreements with a deposit, because the lender is financing the full value of the car.

You need to be at least 18, hold a valid driving licence, and have a minimum monthly income of £1,000. If a lender needs anything further, it is requested as part of the application.

Yes. Self-employed applicants are welcome, and lenders typically look at recent accounts or SA302 documents instead of payslips.

In most cases, yes. Lenders price for risk, and a credit file with defaults or CCJs carries more risk than a clean file. The rate you are offered depends on the full picture, not one factor. A larger deposit, a shorter term, or a less expensive car can all bring the rate down.

Yes. Hero is part of Oakwood Motor Company group, which means the finance and the car come from the same business. There are hundreds of used cars in stock across the Bury and Chorley showrooms to choose from, and every vehicle is owned, checked, and prepared by Oakwood before handover. Because the finance and the stock sit under one roof, there is no risk of getting approved and then struggling to find a dealer who will work with your agreement.
